Blackpool born, Joe Cardle began his career with Port Vale in 2005. Following a loan spell with Clyde in 2007, he signed for Scottish club Airdrie United in 2008, winning the Scottish Challenge Cup.

The following year he moved on to Dunfermline Athletic, and helped the East End Park side to the First Division title in 201011. He subsequently moved to Fife neighbours Raith Rovers in March 2013, he was in the Raith Rovers side that defeated Rangers to win the Scottish Challenge Cup in 2014, before clinching a move to Ross County.
